Refunds, and what happens to the platform fee
How to refund an order in whole or in part, and exactly which fees come back.
Refunds are issued from the order, in full or in part, and go back to the card the customer paid with. The customer always receives the full amount you refund.
Bakeable’s fee stays with Bakeable
The platform fee on the original order is not returned when you refund. It paid for the work of taking that order — the storefront, the checkout, the order itself — and that work happened whether or not the sale stands. The refund comes out of your balance, so on a full refund you are out the platform fee.
Your card processor’s fee works the same way. Stripe and Square do not return their processing fee on a refund, so a refunded order costs you roughly 2.9% + $0.30 on their side as well. That is their policy wherever you take cards.
Partial refunds
You can refund part of an order more than once — for a missing item now and a goodwill gesture later. A partial refund is the way to make a customer whole without absorbing the whole order, and the refund form shows what is still refundable before you commit.
